2001 Audi S4
The Story
I’ve always had an eye for the B5 s4’s. They have a great look body with a very interesting engine for performance modification. The Audi S4 was originally going to be my first car and my first manual car as a daily driver. Fast forward to 2023, I was very interested in buy something with all wheel drive, manual transmission, sub 300 or more horsepower four door cars.
My list contains of 04 to 07 Volvo v70/s60R’s, Mitsubishi evo, ford focus RS, and Audi S4’s. The P2 Volvo’s were cool and interesting but the high pressure 2.5L five cylinder engine were known to break the cylinder walls in the engine and loads of electrical problems and suspension failure. Evos are just too expensive and all of them have been turned into race cars. The focus RS was known for having the wrong head gasket from the factory. So Audi was my final option.
Once I started to look into the s4’s I had a good amount of options to pick out. From the 2.7 v6, the 4.2 v8, and the 3.0 supercharge engines. Obviously in the Audi world the engines are ment to be removed from the car for large maintenance items like timing, turbos, and others. So this was something to consider in the future. I’ve driven almost all the different types of engines in the s4 and all have there goods and bads. But the one engine that seems to be the easiest to deal with was the 2.7 biturbo v6, the b5 generation of the s4.
This high mileage hero has 216,000 miles on the body and on the engine and has been modified after I decided to remove the engine when I was doing a slave cylinder replacement. When I decided to buy this car, the previous owner wanted to part this car out and use the 2.7 engine for his b7 s4 project. I feel like I saved this car and gave it chance in life. The original Ko3 turbos were completely destroyed but yet still made boost under load. But I was more impressed that you can durable the horsepower on the 2.7 engine with $5,000 which is turbos, inlets, and fuel system and a tune all in one price.
Coming from a Volvo background it’s definitely a fresh look and challenge to work on the car but strangely it’s not as terrible to work one oddly. You can tell Audi made it to be taken apart quickly as possible but yet simple on the older cars. But ones everything is all back together the car is worth it. I’ve had fun driving my Volvo’s, but I have a blast driving the b5 s4. It’s definitely a drivers car and I’m glad that I can enjoy a car like this
