1971 Volkswagen Beetle
The Story
When the idea of getting a first car became a possibility, I was lost in which direction to go for. Ultimately I needed an affordable car to please my parents, but a manual and eye catching vehicle was also at the top of my list of needs. Forget about safety. The decision that the Volkswagen Beetle was the perfect car began the 3+ month journey of finding the right one.
It was my 16th birthday when I got to call the car mine. After a 3 hour drive to New Jersey, I was nothing but excited at the sight of my brand new car. It was perfect aside from the surface rust, faulty brakes, and non-working turn signals. But it had a surfboard and beach ball— what’s not to love!
As the small things got fixed, I learned to drive and my passion for cars exponentially grew. I loved everything about them. It was owning this car which pushed me to apply to my local car dealership and enter the industry.
Unfortunately it was after getting this job that I starved the engine of oil due to an issue with the filterless oil plate system. After an engine rebuild, the car was even better than before. The 50 year old car became my daily driver to school and work.
Both for its bright color and cheerful personality, I named the car Sunny. The car is shown love and excitement by everyone who passes by. Through owning a Beetle you understand why they are named the people’s car— Volkswagen. Everyone has a story, both good and bad, about their old Beetle. You don't just own a fun weekend car, but a piece history.
