2005 Volvo V70 R

The Story

Ever since I acquired my 2006 S60, the Volvo V70R became one of my “attainable dream cars” and fortunately an opportunity came about to finally own one. I found this R listed on Facebook Marketplace located in Mooresville North Carolina. It was being sold as it had a blown head gasket and the previous owner didn’t have the immediate time to look into fixing it. I had my eye on the listing for a few months and decided I needed to jump on it before it sold. My father and I along with 2 of my good friends made the trek down to Mooresville one weekend during my college semester and trailered the car back up to Pennsylvania. Soon after we tore into the engine planning to fix what was hopefully just a blown head gasket. Now any of you Volvo nuts can probably guess where this is going, but sure enough the cylinder number 4’s walls were cracked, meaning I had to source a new engine. Not even 12 hours after discovering the cracked block I had a “new” engine sourced from a wrecked S60R at a local salvage yard. A few weeks later after many long nights in the garage, many choice words, and a lot of help from some amazing friends, we swapped the donor engine into the R and got it running. 2 months later it’s running like a champ and I can’t wait to start building it. It’s still needs a bit of work like new struts and an issue with the geartronic selector, so while it’s not perfect, I couldn’t be happier with it!
